Workshop Background/Objective of China HPC Workshop
The Asian Technology Information Program (ATIP) will soon begin its sixteenth year of operations. ATIP is recognized as a premier source of information on Asia’s most important scientific and technological trends and developments. ATIP covers a broad set of S&T topics across the Asian region, and is particularly experienced in reporting on High-Performance Computing (HPC). ATIP maintains offices and/or operations throughout the Asian region, including an office in Beijing China, and is an established activity in the Asian S&T community. ATIP has already conducted several China HPC Workshops in conjunction with the Supercomputing Conference series, in 2003, 2004, and 2007. The primary aim of the HPC Workshop is to enhance Western understanding of developments in China and to foster collaborations between Chinese and Western research communities.
ATIP’s 4th Chinese HPC Workshop at SC 2010
With support from the US NSF, ATIP is planning a Workshop on Advanced and High-Performance Computing in China, emphasizing new hardware developments and their applications. The full-day workshop will be held on Monday, November 15, 2010 from 8:30 am - 5:30 pm in New Orleans, LA as part of the Supercomputing 2010 Conference (SC 2010) workshop program. ATIP's previous HPC workshops were highly successful, and based on feedback and suggestions from previous audiences, this year's workshop will include not only academic research presentations, but also applications and real users, with particular emphasis on new hardware developments. The 2010 Workshop will be organized into a number of sessions to emphasize these aspects. The workshop is planned to be a one-track event with a reception/poster session as well as panel discussion.
Organizing Committee:
- Dr. David Kahaner President, Asian Technology Information Program
- Prof Depei Qian Beihang University Haidian, Beijing, China
In addition, a committee composed of esteemed scientists from the US and China (including Hong Kong) will provide advice and recommendations concerning Workshop participants and program details.
From the US they are as follows:
- Prof. Yuefan DENG, Applied Mathematics Department, Stony Brook University (SUNY), Stony Brook, NY
- Prof. Xiaodong ZHANG, Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Ohio State University, Columbus, OH
- Prof. Jack Dongarra, Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department, University of Tennessee, Knoxville
- Dr. Virginia Bedford, Associate Director, Arctic Region Supercomputing Center, Fairbanks, AK
- Prof. Xian-he SUN, Chairman of the Department of Computer Science, Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, IL
From China (including Hong Kong):
- Dr. Ninghui SUN, Institute of Computer Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS)
- Dr. Yunquan ZHANG, Institute of Software, CAS
- Mr. Zili XI, Shanghai Supercomputing Center (SSC)
- Dr. Yu ZENG, Beijing Computing Center
- Dr. Mingfa ZHU, Lenovo
- Prof. WK Lam, Hong Kong Institute of High Performance Computing
- Dr. Lei Han TANG, Hong Kong Baptist University
- Dr. Cho-Li WANG, Hong Kong University
Workshop Program
The workshop program is still being finalized, but is tentatively organized as follows:
- Chinese Government Initiatives for HPC
- Experience at HPC Centers
- Chinese University and Institute Research Related to Specialized Hardware
- Science and Engineering Applications in China (e.g., steel, automotive, weather, genomics, nanotechnology, etc.)
- Vendors (both Chinese as well as multinationals operating in China) Providing Solutions with Specialized Hardware
- Panel on opportunities for China-US Research Collaborations
Invited Speakers/Distinguished Guests
ATIP plans to invite up to 20 Chinese scientists to participate at the workshop, including a combination of academics, CAS researchers, "real" users from industry, some young postdoctoral students, and a selection of both Chinese and multinational computer vendors (the latter group to provide perspective on the issues relating to HPC in China).
Attendees of ATIP Workshop
ATIP Workshop will be open to everyone registered for SC 2010 conference/exhibition in New Orleans. Our previous China workshops have attracted HPC scientists, educators, students and professionals as well as people who are interested in China for research, sales, and collaboration. The workshop will also probably attract many Chinese Americans, including students. SC 2009 reported an attendance of more than 11,000 people.
Call for Participation:
Participants may propose to present papers in oral sessions. Workshop presentations will be archived as part of the ACM Digital Library. SC 2010 (http://sc10.supercomputing.org/) is expected to have over 11,000 participants and is the world's largest and most important event for those using or interested in HPC. Participants will have the opportunity to have detailed discussions with key members of the international HPC community as well as to examine hundreds of exhibits from vendors, industrial users, and research centers around the world. The technical program includes research papers, panels, and discussions on many aspects of HPC.
